Sofia, May 17, 2023, SPA -- On May 18, Sofia is hosting the 16th Conference of the Chiefs of Defence/General Staffs of the Balkan Countries, Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) quoted the Defence Ministry as saying in a press release issued on Wednesday.

Caretaker Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov will address the participants. President Rumen Radev has been invited to attend as Commander-in-Chief of the Bulgarian Armed Forces.

Bulgarian Chief of Defence Admiral Emil Eftimov will welcome his counterparts from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, Montenegro, the Republic of North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Turkiye. Also attending will be Chairman of the EU Military Committee General Robert Brieger and Deputy Commander of Allied Joint Force Command Naples Lieutenant General Stephen Kelsey. Eddy Liegeois, head of the Transport Networks unit at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport, will be guest lecturer at the forum.

Participants in the conference will discuss regional military connectivity and mobility as a focus in the partnership in the Balkans in search of innovative ways to integrate and cooperate. The working sessions will discuss matters of common interest for the participating countries' armed forces.

The Balkan Countries Chiefs of Defence/General Staffs Forum was launched in 2007 as an initiative aimed at promoting stability, cooperation and the well-being of the countries in that region. Regional military cooperation includes exchanging information on security topics and potential threats to the region, joint exercises, courses and trainings, and seeking opportunities to broaden the scope of common activities.
