Vice Minister G. M. Tučkutė and European policy and business leaders discussed solutions for strengthening European defence

On May 11 Vice Minister of National Defence Greta Monika Tučkutė attends the 5th European Defence and Security Summit in Brussels which brings together European Union policy and business leaders with the academic community to share thoughts on the European defence identity in the wake of the war Russia started in Ukraine.

Vice Minister underscored delivering her keynote address that European and other countries that upheld democratic values had to continue rendering assistance to Ukraine actively because it was the only way towards the defeat of Russia, an existential threat to the entire Europe. G. M. Tučkutė also noted that EU member states and institutions had to act closely together with the defence industry, strengthen manufacturing capacity, develop and apply defence industry innovation and fill the stocks.

Vice Minister pointed out in her remarks that the European countries needed to be united in seeking decisions on strengthen security at the NATO Summit in Vilnius in July. She also mentioned the necessity to take decisions on Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic integration. "We have to give Ukraine a clear path towards a certain NATO membership. It should already be a member of NATO," Vice Minister said.

While in in Brussels, G. M. Tučkutė also met with Chief Executive of the European Defence Agency (EDA) Jiří Šedivý for a discussion on the implementation of the EU-level agreement to transfer 1 billion artillery rounds to Ukraine.

Vice Minister said that the Lithuania was highly positive about the recent instrument proposed by the European Commission to support industry production and was looking to use it. She also told about the challenges faced by the Lithuanian defence industry in regulation and financing, an area that is shared throughout Europe. G. M. Tučkutė invited the Chief Executive to join the European Commission and look into potential modifications at EU level to address the issue.
