May 10, Minister of National Defence Arvydas Anušauskas met with Ambassador of Poland to Lithuania HE Konstanty Radziwiłł newly appointed to the position. Minister thanked Poland for the engagement in strengthening the region, discussed further cooperation between the countries in security and defence. According to him, partnership with Poland remains high among Lithuania's security policy priorities.
"We value Poland's active role in ensuring security in our region, your contribution to the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states, bilateral initiatives between our respective Special Operations Forces. We are united by the common threat, therefore we have to start thinking about a joint response. We need to continue the intense bilateral political-military cooperation," said Minister A. Anušauskas thanking Poland for its leadership in supporting Ukraine.
The fourth Lithuanian-Polish Defence Ministers' Council will take place in Warsaw within several weeks. According to A. Anušauskas, both countries have to join forces to ensure that the NATO Summit in Vilnius results with decisions on stronger regional defence plans and defence, force-pre-deployment, 2% of GDP defence spending, and support to Ukraine's NATO integration.
Mutual Lithuanian-Polish assistance and coordinated response to the security challenges arising in the region has grown over the past years: cooperation has been strengthened on defence planning, air defence, maritime awareness, procurement and cybersecurity, Defence Ministers' Council is held annually, new joint military initiatives have been launched.
