On Wednesday, President Gitanas Nausėda met remotely with Polish President Andrzej Duda and Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová. The meeting was held in preparation for next week's summit between the leaders of the Bucharest Nine and US President Joe Biden in Warsaw.

During the meeting, the Presidents of Lithuania, Poland and Slovakia discussed regional security issues, Russia's war in Ukraine and support for the country fighting against the aggressor, as well as preparations for the NATO Summit in Vilnius.

According to the Lithuanian leader, the role of the United States is crucial in ensuring the security of NATO's eastern flank. The situation in the region will remain tense for a considerable time ahead, which is why the Alliance's defense spending needs to increase, and the military industry needs to work at full capacity. President Gitanas Nausėda also highlighted the preparations for the Vilnius Summit.

"The NATO Summit in Vilnius will be a timely moment to take decisions that will strengthen the security of both our region and the Alliance as a whole. It is important not only to implement the decisions taken in Madrid, but also to move forward: to agree on renewed regional defense plans, to strengthen air defense, to increase defense spending. Together, we must strive to maintain the unity and resolve of the Alliance," the President pointed out.

The leaders of Lithuania, Poland and Slovakia also discussed support for Ukraine. Gitanas Nausėda underlined the importance of uninterrupted military assistance to Ukrainians to meet their needs on the battlefield as the war is approaching a pivotal phase.
