Defence Minister Jana Černochová today had an official call with the Minister of National Defence of Türkiye General Hulusi Akar. The agenda of their meeting covered the security situation in Europe, in the Middle East and in the Euro-Atlantic Area, as well as bilateral defence and defence industrial cooperation.

Both Ministers started the meeting with discussing the situation in Ukraine. Minister Černochová informed Minister Akar about the scope of the Czech Republic's assistance to Ukraine and the determination to continue the aid. Minister Černochová also said the Czech Republic plans to train approximately 4,000 servicemembers by the end of this year and she also highlighted the solidarity displayed by Czech citizens, who have already contributed with sizeable amounts to Ukraine.

Minister Černochová highly appreciated the role Türkiye has played in exchanges of prisoners of war and in the negotiation of the grain deal, which made is possible to resume the export of millions of tons of agricultural products from Ukrainian Black Sea ports that had been blocked because of the war with Russia. "So far, the grain agreement enabled 650 ships to export 17 million tons of Ukrainian grain to global markets," Minister Akar stated.

Minister Černochová also highly valued the defence assistance that Türkiye has provided to Ukraine, including for example the Bayraktar drones. She also offered her condolences with respect of the victims of the November terrorist attack in Istanbul and condemned any manifestations of terrorism.

Both Ministers concurred on the irreplaceable role that NATO has for security of the Euro-Atlantic Area. According to Minister Černochová, both the Czech Republic and Türkiye are committed to a militarily strong and politically united Alliance. "The membership of Finland and Sweden in NATO will significantly strengthen Allied military capabilities. It is in the interest of all of us to complete the accession process as soon as possible," Minister Černochová underlined. Both Ministers endorsed further deepening of mutual cooperation in defence industry, education, tactical training and exercises. "We are confident that common exercises help strengthen interoperability," Minister Akar said.
