On Friday, President Gitanas Nausėda met with General Robert Brieger, the Chairman of the European Union Military Committee. The meeting focused on Russia's war in Ukraine, the security situation in the region, as well as support for Ukraine.
During the meeting, the President pointed out that the security situation in the region remained tense and it was therefore necessary to increase support for Ukraine and to seek a rapid victory against Putin. According to Gitanas Nausėda, only when Russia withdraws its troops from all the occupied territories of Ukraine will this war be over and Europe safe. The President stressed that Western countries had to help Ukraine to defeat the monster of the Kremlin, and that not only support in the form of arms but also training for Ukrainian soldiers was important.
President Gitanas Nausėda underlined that the current security situation dictated the need for Europe to increase its defense capabilities, boost its military industry, and improve military mobility.
"It is now the duty of every EU country to invest in its own security, and Lithuania will continue its efforts to increase defense spending from its current level of 2.5% of GDP. Smooth cooperation between the EU and NATO also needs to take place in order to ensure peace and security in Europe," the President said.
