Exactly one year ago, a coup d'état by the military delivered a massive blow for the aspirations of the Sudanese people and their transition to democracy. Today, the European Union pays tribute to the millions of young Sudanese who courageously led a peaceful revolution setting an example to the world, as well as to the hundreds who lost their lives while seeking to defend their rights.
Since then, the EU continues to demand an immediate return to the civilian transition and dialogue between the parties. It is the one and only road to freedom, peace and justice for all. The EU also calls on the military to respect human rights and international humanitarian law.
One year on, the situation has become even more urgent. The Sudanese people have lost much more than the realisation of their legitimate aspirations for a civilian-led government that responds to their need for respect, equality and fairness. The economy has declined and the humanitarian and security situations have not ceased to deteriorate. The military hold a particular responsibility for this.
Sudan has suffered under military rule for far too long and the responsibility lies today on the military to undo the damage done last year.
A political settlement can only be concluded if the parties have the courage and the political will that the current impasse demands. The UNITAMS-AU-IGAD tripartite mechanism is playing a constructive role. All parties should work with it in the national interest of securing a deal that is fair and balanced and puts the transition back on track. Inclusivity is key and all parties need to compromise.
The Sudanese people must be allowed to gather peacefully at a time when they wholeheartedly demand change. The EU calls on the authorities and the security forces to show restraint and to protect lives and the freedom of expression and assembly across the country.
