Tehran (ISNA) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif reacted to the latest developments in Afghanistan, stressing that Tehran hopes former president of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai's initiative on formation of a Coordination Council by Afghan leaders will lead to dialogue and a peaceful transition of power in the country.

"Violence and war—like occupation—never solve problems. Iran welcomes announcement by former president of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai on forming a Coordination Council by Afghan leaders," Zarif wrote on his official Twitter account.

"We hope that this initiative will lead to dialogue and a peaceful transition of power in Afghanistan," he added.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to continue its efforts for spread of peace in Afghanistan," Zarif stressed.

Hamid Karzai had earlier wrote on his Twitter account, "Following the departure of Mr. Ashraf Ghani and responsible officials from Afghanistan, Coordination Council consisting of Abdullah Abdullah, Head of Afghanistan High Council for National Reconciliation, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, Leader of Islamic Party of Afghanistan and former President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai were formed in order to prevent chaos and reduce suffering of Afghan people and better manage the affairs related to the peaceful transfer of power".
