A local Afghan official has been killed in an attack by gunmen, who also killed two of his bodyguards and left another one wounded, in the capital, Kabul.

"Logar provincial council member Naser Ghairat and two of his bodyguards were killed and another wounded," said Kabul police spokesman Ferdaus Faramarz on Monday.

Police said that the gunmen had fled the scene of the attack and that authorities had opened an investigation.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the killing.

Two gunmen attacked a crowded ceremony, attended by Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah and other senior figures, in Kabul on Friday. Abdullah escaped uninjured, though. The Daesh terrorist group claimed responsibly for that attack.

The Taliban militants have been attacking government officials and soldiers in Afghanistan, too.

Last week, the United States and the Taliban signed an agreement aimed at ending the 18-year-old war in Afghanistan. But the militant group attacked government soldiers shortly afterwards.

The US invaded Afghanistan to overthrow a ruling Taliban regime in 2001. But American forces have remained bogged down in the country ever since.
