Readout of Secretary of Defense Mark T. Esper's Meeting With Montenegrin Minister of Defense Predrag Boskovic

Pentagon Chief Spokesperson Jonathan R. Hoffman provided the following readout:

Secretary of Defense Mark T. Esper met with Montenegrin Minister of Defense Predrag Boskovic today at the NATO Defense Ministerial in Brussels, Belgium, to reaffirm the defense relationship between the United States and Montenegro.

The leaders discussed a broad range of defense issues, including Montenegro's progress in transitioning from legacy Soviet defense equipment, equitable burden-sharing, combined efforts to defeat ISIS, and current operations in Afghanistan.

The Secretary and Minister also discussed the importance of stability in the Western Balkans, and how to continue to strengthen defense cooperation to counter malign influence from Russia and China.

Secretary Esper and Minister Boskovic agreed to continue the strong bilateral defense relationship between the U.S. and Montenegro, and to ensure continued close coordination and consultation.
