USS Donald Cook Conducts Exercise with Georgian Coast Guard

BLACK SEA (NNS) -- Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Donald Cook (DDG 75) conducted a maritime exercise with the Georgian coast guard, Jan. 25.
During the exercise, Donald Cook and two Georgian coast guard ships conducted a visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS) exercise, performed ship-to-ship communication checks, and a maneuvering exercise. These practices showcased the U.S. Navy's interoperability with allies and partners. Multinational training such as this allows the Navy to maintain vigilance to the degree necessary to promote a secure and prosperous region.
"Today's exercise was a conclusion to an absolutely fantastic week of cooperation with our Georgian partners," said Cmdr. Matthew Powel, commanding officer of Donald Cook. "It was a pleasure visiting, operating and increasing our interoperability with the country of Georgia. Donald Cook looks forward to the next opportunity we have to work with the Georgian coast guard."
Donald Cook, forward-deployed to Rota, Spain, deployed on its eighth forward-deployed naval forces patrol, Nov. 19, 2018. Donald Cook entered the Black Sea, Jan. 19, to strengthen interoperability with NATO allies and partners and demonstrate the collective resolve to Black Sea security under Operation Atlantic Resolve.
The U.S. Navy routinely operates in the Black Sea consistent with the Montreux Convention and international law. U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied and interagency partners in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.
