US Marines confirmed that the military aircraft that crashed in South Carolina was F-35 jet, a spokesman told Sputnik.
An F-35 fighter jet crashed in the US state of South Carolina, marking the first accident involving the American military's most advanced and expensive aircraft, a spokesperson for the US Marines told Sputnik on Friday.
"It was an f-35 bravo out of the training quadrant, in Beaufort," the spokesperson confirmed when asked about reports that a military aircraft had crashed earlier in the day.
According to the sheriff's office, the pilot was safely ejected. The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office also reported that the crash took place just five miles from the Beaufort Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS).
Earlier, reports stated that it was unclear what type of jet was involved in the incident, however, later the military confirmed to ABC news that an F-35B crashed.
Earlier on Friday, the Beaufort County Sheriff's office announced in an advisory that a military plane near the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort had crashed at approximately 11:45 a.m.
The Beaufort MCAS hosts five squadrons of F/A-18 Hornets and one F-35B squadron.
