UN urges Saudis to stop Yemeni ports blockade

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, May 25, IRNA -- UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator in a statement called for putting an end to Saudi's siege in Yemeni ports.

"I am particularly concerned about the recent decline of commercial food imports through the Red Sea ports," Mark Lowcock was quoted by Reuters as saying.

"If conditions do not improve, a further 10 million people will fall into this category by the end of the year," he added.

Confidence among commercial shippers has eroded due to delays, "including as a result of inspections undertaken by the Saudi-led coalition after these vessels have been cleared by UNVIM," the statement reads.

"I call on the Government of Yemen, with the support of the Coalition, to take active steps to boost commercial imports of food, fuel and humanitarian supplies through all Yemen's ports," Lowcock said.

Saudi Arabia and its regional allies attacked Yemen in March 2015 to bring back to power the deposed president of Yemen Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi.

Thousands of Yemenis have been killed in the attacks conducted by the Saudi-US coalition and more than 2,000 have died due to a cholera epidemic.
