Italy backs Iran Deal
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Rome, May 17, IRNA -- EU will not trample its interests underfoot, said the Italian prime minister, giving his idea about US withdrawal from Iran Deal and re-imposing sanctions on Tehran.
'The Iran Deal was signed to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons in the area that is close to us; it is clear that we are after concord with the US. Of course, we don't deny alliance with the US. But it doesn't mean we will trample our interests underfoot,' said Paolo Gentiloni speaking to Rai 1 TV channel in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Before the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), popularly known as Iran Deal, and after that, Iran has repeatedly announced that it did not and does not intend to develop nuclear weaponry.
The stance of Italy about the JCPOA has not changed. The Italian prime minister had already announced explicitly that Rome, like Berlin and Paris, think that the JCPOA should be kept.
Speaking about his country's stance about the US, UK, and French attack on Syria Gentiloni has recently told the Italian Parliament 'We won't give up the deal, and believe that the JCPOA is right because we consider that one of the most important diplomatic decisions in the past few years.'
Also, after US President Donald Trump quit the JCPOA on May 8, the Italian prime minister wrote in a tweet that the deal should be kept, inasmuch as it helps peace and prevents nuclear weapons from spreading.
