BREST, France (NNS) -- The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Oscar Austin (DDG 79) departed Brest, France, October 12, 2017, after a port visit and refueling.

Oscar Austin is conducting a routine deployment supporting U.S. national security interests in Europe and increasing theater security cooperation and forward naval presence in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations.

"Our time in Brest was very well spent," said Cmdr. Samantha Dutily, commanding officer, USS Oscar Austin. "It provided the crew an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful country of France, allowed us to refuel the ship, and gave me the opportunity to take command of USS Oscar Austin during a very memorable ceremony held on the ship's flight deck. I am humbled and honored to be the commanding officer of this mighty warship."

* During the visit to Brest, Cmdr. Samantha Dutily relieved Cmdr. Janice Smith as USS Oscar Austin's commanding officer.

* Oscar Austin recently visited Eckernforde, Germany, for a scheduled port visit and refueling.

* Following the port visit to Brest, Oscar Austin will continue its patrol in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations.

* U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied, joint, and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.
