The Venezuelan Constituent Assembly has approved Nicolas Maduro as president, head of state and government, and commander-in-chief of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces, media reported on Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – According to the Infobae news portal, the decision was unanimously made by the Constituent Assembly during a special session on Thursday.

The Venezuelan leader was reportedly proclaimed to be a guarantor of the country's democratic transformation process.

According to earlier reports, Maduro declared at the session that the country's executive branch would be subordinate to the National Constituent Assembly.

On July 30, Venezuela held an election of members to the Constituent Assembly, a new legislative body with the power to amend the Constitution. The election took place against the backdrop of mass, deadly protests across the country. Venezuelan opposition, as well as the European Union and the United States, have refused to recognize the body's legitimacy.
