Taliban Storms Base in Afghan Kandahar, Killing at Least 26 Soldiers

The Taliban terrorist group (outlawed in Russia) stormed a base in Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province, killing at least 26 Afghan soldiers and injuring 30 others, local media reported Wednesday, citing sources.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The clashes in Khakrez district of Kandahar province continued for almost five hours, the TOLO news broadcaster reported. According to one of the media outlet's sources, 82 soldiers were at the base when the Taliban launched its attack. Besides, eight soldiers are missing.

"82 soldiers were at the base when the Taliban attacked. The remaining soldiers were not hurt in the attack," the source was quoted as saying by the broadcaster.

The Afghan authorities have not yet commented on the incident. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Taliban terrorist group has recently intensified its activity in Afghanistan. On July 6, the Taliban carried out a mortar shelling attack in the Nangarhar province, injuring 14 people, including women and children. On July 19, the radical movement launched an offensive on the Afghan security service checkpoints in the southern Helmand province. Taliban's most recent attack occurred on Monday in Kabul, and it claimed lives of 24 people.

Afghanistan has been suffering significant political, social and security-related provoked by the activity of the Taliban and Daesh terrorist groups for decades. The Afghan National Defense and Security Forces have been acting together to combat terrorism in the country.
