U.S. 5TH FLEET AREA OF OPERATIONS (NNS) -- Commander, Destroyer Squadron (CDS) 22 announced the guided-missile destroyer USS Truxtun (DDG 103) as their 2016 Battle Effectiveness (Battle "E") award winner, March 14.

The crew aboard Truxtun (DDG 103) believes they have the best warship on the waterfront. The motto "Our Ship" is something Truxtun Sailors state on a daily basis.

"I am truly honored and humbled to serve as Truxtun's commanding officer," said Cmdr. Troy Denison. "The Sailors of 'Our Ship' earned this award each and every day of 2016. Their hard work and dedication earned Truxtun her Battle 'E'."

The Battle "E" award is granted annually for ships, submarines and other Navy units that demonstrate superior performance throughout a year-long evaluation. The evaluation is an assessment of the command's readiness to carry out its primary mission areas.

Battle "E" is achieved through meeting and exceeding multiple operational standards based on individual and community efforts.

Eligibility for this award demands demonstrated day-to-day excellence in addition to superior achievement during certifications and qualifications conducted throughout the competitive period.

To qualify for award consideration, a ship must be nominated by their immediate superior in command, as well as win a minimum of three of five command excellence awards.

The command excellence awards include Type Commander Ship's Safety; Maritime Warfare; Engineering and Survivability; Command, Control, Communications and Information Warfare; Logistics Management; and Ship Safety.

Truxtun received command excellence awards in four of the five categories. The ship earned its sixth consecutive engineering and survivability excellence award; third consecutive command, control, communications and information warfare excellence award; first logistics management excellence award; and fifth consecutive ship safety excellence award.

The Battle "E" competition is conducted to strengthen individual command performance, improve overall force readiness, and to recognize outstanding performance. The award symbolizes the overall readiness of the command to carry out its assigned wartime tasks.

Truxtun may now display the large painted white letter "E" on her superstructure. Sailors who served aboard the ship at any time in calendar year 2016 earn a Battle "E" ribbon for their uniform.

The crew plans to continue to maintain that level of efficiency while on their scheduled deployment.

"We expect a lot out of our Sailors and they consistently exceed those expectations," said Master Chief Roger Harding, Truxtun's command master chief. "They constantly face new challenges and rise above them to complete whatever mission we are assigned."

Truxtun, homeported in Norfolk, is part of the George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group (GHWBCSG).

GHWBCSG is comprised of the staff of Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 2; aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77); the nine squadrons and staff of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 8; Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 22 staff; guided-missile destroyers USS Laboon (DDG 58) and USS Truxtun (DDG 103); Danish guided-missile frigate HDMS Peter Willemoes (F 362); and guided-missile cruisers USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) and USS Hue City (CG 66).

Truxtun is deployed in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of maritime security operations designed to reassure allies and partners and preserve the freedom of navigation and the free flow of commerce in the region.
