Pakistan Air Force Chief Urges India to 'Show Restraint' Amid Border Tensions

Pakistan's Air Force Chief Sohail Aman said that India should demonstrate "some restraint" amid the escalation of situation on the military control line in the disputed region of Kashmir.

NEW DELHI (Sputnik) – India should demonstrate "some restraint" amid the escalation of situation on the military control line in the disputed region of Kashmir, Pakistan's Air Force Chief Sohail Aman said Thursday.

"We are not worried about India at all, it is better if they show some restraint," Aman said at the International Defense Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS) as quoted by the Dawn newspaper.

He called on New Delhi to "speak on the matters of principle" to improve ties between the two countries.

The statement comes in the wake of Wednesday's cross-border shooting between Pakistani and Indian troops that resulted in the death of at least 20 people.

India and Pakistan have been contesting the Jammu and Kashmir region since gaining independence from the United Kingdom in 1947. The conflict has already provoked two wars between the countries. The Line of Control, where deadly incidents take place on nearly a daily basis, separates the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir from the territory under the jurisdiction of Pakistani forces.

The recent escalation of violence across the India-Pakistan border came after 19 Indian soldiers died as a result of the September 18 attack by armed militants on a base outside of Srinagar, the capital of India-controlled Kashmir.
