MANAMA, Bahrain (NNS) -- For the second time during their 2016 deployment, the crew of aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) (Ike) pulled into the Kingdom of Bahrain for a port visit, Nov. 1-5.

The respite was welcome and gave the crew another opportunity to venture out into the streets of the tiny island nation to experience the local culture.

"I can't believe how nice it is here," said Seaman Tyler Owens. "I was able to rest and relax in a five-star hotel for the first time in my life. After taking full advantage of the pool and spa, I feel ready to get back out to sea."

Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) hosted several tours and events including horseback riding, go-karting, and a tour of the city. Sightseeing tours took Sailors throughout the capital city of Manama to see national monuments like the Al-Fateh Mosque, Bahrain World Trade Center, and a 4,000-year-old fortress. Participants were given a hands-on history lesson, and were able to learn about the origins of the culture of Bahrain.

"I didn't know how much history this city held last time I visited," said Chief Petty Officer Daphne Johnston. "I saw the country in a new light after learning about the historical significance of the area."

The crew was afforded an opportunity to give back to the community and strengthen relations with the Bahraini people when Sailors were invited to a local school to read and spend time with students.

"It was heartwarming to be around the kids and give back to the country that hosted us," said Petty Officer 3rd Class Duc Nguyen. "I think it's the most rewarding way to spend your off time."

Ike departed Bahrain well-rested and ready to continue in support of ongoing operations in the area.

"The culture of the Middle East is incredibly different from that of America," said Seaman Rebekkah Hoover. "There's no way to fully appreciate it until you experience it in person. I left Bahrain with a better understanding of the people and why they live the way they do."

Ike, embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3, and the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (Ike CSG) are deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, maritime security operations, and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.
