SINGAPORE (NNS) -- Amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) and the embarked 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) departed Singapore after a scheduled four-day port visit, Oct. 20.
While in Singapore, Bonhomme Richard Sailors and Marines hosted distinguished visitors during a on-board reception, visited local sites, and participated in a community relations project at the Genesis School for Special Education.
"Mostly, I enjoyed sitting down to play with the kids, because they normally don't get to hang out with people outside of their setting," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Kester Blaird of his experience at the school. "It was time well spent -- being able to see the school and also get a little time to see Singapore, as well."
The ship's Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) offered trips to the Singapore Zoo and the Southeast Asia Aquarium, as well as riverboat tours of Singapore's cultural and historical sites.
"Overall I had a really good time," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Twan Sia, a participant of MWR's riverboat tour. "The views, the scenery, the whole experience was breathtaking. It was probably one of the best ports that I've visited."
Following the scheduled port visit, Bonhomme Richard will continue a routine deployment in support of security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
Bonhomme Richard is the flagship of the Bonhomme Richard Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG). The Bonhomme Richard ESG consists of Bonhomme Richard, amphibious transport dock USS Green Bay (LPD 20), and amphibious dock landing ship USS Germantown (LSD 42).
