Lithuania is planning to spend over 100 million euros ($112 million) to purchase the NASAMS air defense systems manufactured in Norway, Defense Minister Juozas Olekas said on Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – According to the country's defense ministry, two batteries of the Lithuanian armed forces will be equipped with the air defense systems.

"We plan to spend a bit more than 100 million euros," he told the Baltic News Service.

At the moment, the country operates only short-range air defense systems. In May, the Defense Ministry announced it started negotiations with Norway on possible procurement of NASAMS mid-range air defense systems, which are capable of hitting targets at the range of up to 25 miles and at the height of up to 9 miles.

This year, the government allocated 575 million euros on the defense, next year the Defense Ministry expects the defense budget to reach 725 million euros.
