The Polish authorities offered NATO to station troops in the Polish town of Suwalki, bordering Lithuania, on the rotation basis, media reported Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The forward deployment of the alliance's troops are needed to reinforce the so-called Suwalki gap, a weak point where Russia could allegedly "cut off" the Baltic States in the event of war, Polish Deputy Defense Minister Tomasz Szatkowski said as quoted by The Wall Street Journal.

"Now we'll have not just a tripwire but a speed bump – although not a concrete wall," Szatkowski said.

Earlier in May, Polish authorities claimed that the decision to deploy four NATO battalions in Poland and Baltic states has been already made and only technical details are left to discuss at the Alliance summit in Warsaw which is scheduled for on July 8-9.
