NATO Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow praised Romania's long-standing contributions to Allied security, during the first day of his visit to Bucharest on Monday (25 April 2016). He commended Romania for its participation in NATO-led missions in Afghanistan and Kosovo, its contributions to Black Sea security and its commitment to raise defence spending to 2% of GDP. Ambassador Vershbow held bilateral talks with President Klaus Werner Iohannis, with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Lazăr Comănescu, and with the Minister of National Defence, Mr. Mihnea Motoc.

In his bilateral meetings, Ambassador Vershbow discussed priorities for this year's NATO Summit in Warsaw, as well as NATO's response to the biggest security challenges in a generation. Ambassador Vershbow also thanked Romania for hosting important NATO assets, including the Multinational Division South East, a NATO Force Integration Unit in Bucharest, and an important part of NATO's missile defence system in Deveselu.

On 26 April, the Deputy Secretary General will deliver a speech at the National Library of Romania.
