Taipei, Jan. 29 (CNA) President-elect Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) said Friday that she has consistently insisted on the Republic of China's (Taiwan's) sovereignty over Taiping Island, and she asked all parties involved in the dispute to maintain peace and stability in the region.

The Republic of China (Taiwan) government has held firm on its sovereignty over the island, which lies 1,600 kilometers south of Taiwan, Tsai said during a trip to Yunlin County to thank voters for electing her president.

Tsai stressed that all parties should abide by international law in their maritime claims, uphold the freedom of navigation and flight, and settle disputes peacefully.

Several countries, including Taiwan, China, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia and Vietnam claim all or parts of the South China Sea.

Tsai's comment came a day after President Ma Ying-jeou visited the island for the first time during his nearly eight years in office, and proposed a road map for his South China Sea peace initiative.

The initiative urges all parties concerned to be included in a mechanism for talks on the South China Sea and cooperate in reaching solutions and sharing the region's resources.
