Taipei, Jan. 3 (CNA) Four vessels operated by China's Coast Guard, including one possibly equipped with gun turrets, reportedly entered waters around the disputed Diaoyutai Islands on Sunday.
The Okinawa-based 11th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters of Japan said its vessel warned the approaching Chinese ships not to move closer to Japan's waters, according to a Kyodo News report.
One of the Chinese vessels carrying the identification number of 31241 seemed to be equipped with gun turrets and was accompanied by Coast Guard ships numbered 2401, 2166 and 2101, the report said.
The Japanese government closely monitored the situation closely after its Coast Guard noticed armed Chinese ships entering waters near the uninhabited islands in the East China Sea controlled by Japan.
The islands, called the Senkakus in Japanese and the Diaoyu by Beijing, are also claimed by Taiwan.
The last time Chinese Coast Guard ships were found in the area was on Dec. 26, according to the Kyodo News report.
