The US Department of Defense ambitious plan to expand the network of military bases globally raises concern in Moscow, Russia's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Pentagon is preparing to build new military outposts in the Middle East, Southeast Asia and in Africa to contain the expansion of Islamic State (IS, or Daesh in Arabic), a terror group outlawed in both the United States and Russia, according to the new York Times.

In a communique published on the ministry's website, Zakharova said that 'Washington's plan to envelop the world in its net of military infrastructure to advance a broadly-worded set of goals raises serious concerns.'

She said that reluctance of the United States to cooperate with Russia in the fight against IS and other international terrorist groups raised the question of what the true goal of US military expansion was and who it would be aimed at.

According to US media reports, the Pentagon plans to build large-scale military hubs and smaller camps in Afghanistan, Niger, and Cameroon, to allegedly carry out counterterrorism missions.
