The Taliban militant group has claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on a military base in the Afghan capital city of Kabul, Press TV reports.

On Saturday, Taliban confirmed that militants affiliated with the militant group carried out the deadly offensive against Camp Integrity on the outskirts of Kabul the night before.

Earlier in the day, NATO had said in a statement that the attack had claimed the lives of a NATO soldier and eight NATO-contracted Afghan civilians.

No information has yet been released on the nationality of the slain NATO serviceman.

The offensive also wounded several other NATO soldiers and Afghan civilians, NATO spokesman Col. Brian Tribus said.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan's Interior Ministry said that the militants targeted the military base with an explosive-laden car, adding that the country's security forces managed to kill three assailants.

The Camp Integrity attack in Kabul came hours after two powerful bomb blasts rocked elsewhere in the city. An aggregate of 51 people were killed and hundreds of others were injured in the triple attacks on Friday.

The attacks come against the backdrop of the recent negotiations between the government of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and the Taliban militant group aimed at ending the bloodshed in the violence-wracked country.

US invaded Afghanistan in 2001 with the stated aim of rooting out the ruling Taliban government at the time as well as insecurity across the country.

After the 13 years, however, insecurity still persists across the country.
