Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh said that authorities have tightened control on the border with Pakistan after a terrorist attack.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Indian authorities have tightened control on the border with Pakistan after a terrorist attack in the northern Indian state of Punjab, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said Monday.

Earlier in the day, Indian media reported that four gunmen had opened fire on a bus and a police station in the Gurdaspur and Dinanagar districts. According to various reports, the attack left five to nine people dead and several injured.

The incident occurred close to the India-Pakistan border.

'Spoke to DG BSF [Border Security Force] Shri DK Pathak and instructed him to step up the vigil on India-Pakistan border in the wake of attack in Gurudaspur,' Singh said in a Twitter posting.

Singh said he is confident that the situation in Punjab would be under control soon. The Ministry of Home Affairs convened an emergency meeting in response to the attack.

Punjab borders the Jammu and Kashmir state, disputed by India and Pakistan following the 1947 dissolution of British India and the establishment of the two countries as modern states. Local residents, especially those residing in the Kashmir Valley, call for greater autonomy and independence from India.
