Afghan security forces have killed at least 28 Taliban militants and wounded several others in a fresh military operation across Afghanistan, the country's Defense Ministry says.
'A total of 28 armed militants have been killed, 27 wounded and two others arrested as Afghan army carried out clean-up operations in different places of the country within the last 24 hours,' the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.
The statement also confirmed that as a result of roadside blasts over the same period, three army soldiers lost their lives.
Afghan security personnel also confiscated weapons and defused several improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the operation, according to the statement.
The Taliban militants have yet to make comments.
Foreign troops and Afghan forces have failed to maintain security across Afghanistan years after the US-led NATO troops invaded the country in 2001 as part of Washington's so-called war on terror.
The United States and its NATO allies removed Taliban militants from power, but several areas in the militancy-riddled country are still experiencing violence and bloodshed.
The US-led Western military alliance in Afghanistan officially ended its combat mission on December 31, 2014. However 13,500 foreign forces have remained in Afghanistan; Senior US officials say the forces will focus mainly on training Afghan security forces across the country.
