The Arab coalition's aircraft renewed strikes against targets in the southern Yemeni city of Aden after the expiration of a five-day humanitarian truce in the country, a senior Yemeni army official said Monday.

CAIRO (Sputnik) – The truce between Shiite Houthi rebels and the coalition of Arab nations under Saudi Arabia's leadership was announced late Tuesday, May 12 and expired late Sunday. Both sides of the conflict traded blame for violating the short ceasefire.

'They began bombing Aden a few minutes ago,' an army commander loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh told Ria Novosti.

The truce between Shiite Houthi rebels and the coalition of Arab nations under Saudi Arabia's leadership was announced late Tuesday, May 12 and expired late Sunday. Both sides of the conflict traded blame for violating the short ceasefire.

Anti-Houthi Operation Decisive Storm began on March 26 at the request of displaced President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, who had fled to neighboring Saudi Arabia amid the fighting.

On April 21, the Arab coalition announced an end to the military operation and launched Operation Restoring Hope to provide a humanitarian corridor for residents in need of assistance and focus on counter-terrorism efforts.

UN figures say the Saudi-led coalition's air campaign has killed over 1,600, injured more than 6,000 and displaced tens of thousands more.
