Greek Defense Minister Panos Kammenos and US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter will discuss Athens' proposal to construct a NATO air base in the Aegean Sea during a meeting next week, the Greek Defense Ministry said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Kammenos did not provide details on which Greek island would accommodate a possible new NATO base.

'In a few days, I will visit the United States, where I am going to meet my [US] counterpart and discuss… a proposal for the construction of an important NATO air base in the Aegean Sea,' Kammenos was quoted as saying in a press statement issued by the ministry on Friday.

Since Greece joined the alliance in 1952, Washington has regularly provided Athens with military and economic aid.

NATO has been strengthening its military presence in Europe, especially along Russia's western border amid the conflict in southeastern Ukraine over the last year.

The alliance has a large number of military installations across Europe, including in Germany, Belgium, Portugal, Italy and the United Kingdom. Earlier this year, NATO announced it would set up six new command and control units in Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and the Baltic states.
