DAMASCUS (Sputnik) – Houthi militants and their allies have taken over a military base in the southern Yemeni city of Taiz, a Lebanese TV channel reported Wednesday.

The rebels seized the headquarters of the 35th army brigade during violent clashes with forces loyal to country's President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi who fled the country amid mounting tensions in March, according to al-Mayadeen.

Despite the international coalition announcing the completion of the military operation Decisive Storm in Yemen on Tuesday night, clashes have reportedly continued in southern areas of the country, including the cities of Aden, Taiz and Lahij.

The military operation by the Saudi-led coalition against the Houthis was launched in late March at the request of Hadi.

The Restoring Hope campaign, which will focus on counter-terrorism efforts, humanitarian missions, and the revival of political dialogue in Yemen, will replace the terminated Decisive Storm mission.

The Houthi rebels, Yemen's main opposition force, control large territories in the country, including the capital Sanaa.
