The Saudi-led coalition of Arab states airdropped lethal aid to supporters of the Yemeni president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi.

SANAA (Sputnik) – The Saudi-led coalition of Arab states has airdropped lethal aid to supporters of the Yemeni president fighting some 200 kilometers east of the capital Sanaa, a military source told Sputnik Tuesday.

'Weapons were airdropped to President [Abd Rabbuh Mansur] Hadi in the Marib governorate [in central Yemen]. Similar operations have already taken place in Aden, Hajjah and Ad Dali,' the source said.

Yemen has been in turmoil since the Shiite Houthi rebels took over large areas in several locations across the country. In January, the Houthis captured the presidential palace and key governmental buildings in Sanaa, prompting President Hadi to resign. Later, Hadi rescinded his resignation and fled the country.

In late March, Saudi Arabia, alongside other Arab states, including Egypt, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, began carrying out airstrikes against positions of the Houthis in Yemen, following a request from Hadi.

In order to stop increasing civilian casualties, earlier this month, Russia submitted its draft resolution to the UN Security Council, calling for a 'humanitarian pause' in the Yemeni conflict, an immediate ceasefire and the arms embargo imposed on both sides of the conflict.

These provisions have reportedly not been included in the final resolution by several Gulf states due to be voted later on Tuesday, imposing an arms embargo and international financial sanctions on leaders involved in the Houthi movement.
