Saudi-led warplanes have battered southern Yemen overnight in the most intense air raids since the launch of a campaign against the impoverished country last month, local residents say.

Local residents and witnesses in the southern port city of Aden said on Friday that the airstrikes lasted well into the night and targeted several areas, including the municipal headquarters of Dar Saad at the city's northern entrance.

'In Aden, the raids began at around 10:00 pm (1900 GMT) on Thursday and were the most violent since the start of 'Operation Decisive Storm,'' residents said.

The Saudi raids also targeted several public places, including a stadium in the center of the city.

Sources say a series of 'extremely violent' air raids also targeted Ataq, the capital of Shabwa Province east of Aden. The air raids by Saudi Arabia came after Ansarullah fighters managed to take control of Ataq, the capital of oil-rich Shabwa, earlier on Thursday.

Also on Friday, a fresh wave of Saudi air raids reportedly hit several telecommunication targets in the west and northwest of Yemen.

Meanwhile, Saudi airborne assaults have also struck Yemen's Defense Ministry in Sana'a. Separate raids by Saudi fighter jets also targeted a food supply building belonging to the Yemeni army in the west of the capital.

Saudi Arabia's air campaign against Yemen started on March 26 without a UN mandate in a bid to restore power to the country's fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, a staunch ally of Riyadh.

Hundreds of people have so far been killed and thousands more wounded since the beginning of the Saudi aggression. Most victims of the raids are reported to be women and children.
