An attack by a coalition of Arab countries on rebel targets in Yemen's capital, Sanaa, have left 15 soldiers dead and crippled the country's international airport.

Air strikes carried out by a Saudi-led coalition of Arab countries have hit Yemen's international airport at Sanaa, rendering the runway unusable and forcing the airport to go out of service, according to a source in the country's aviation service, a day after more than 100 UN staff used the airport to leave the country due to the worsening security situation.

Also on Sunday, a military official reported that a raid carried out on Saturday night targeting the Al-Subaha base in Sanaa, the headquarters of the rebel republican guard, had left 15 soldiers dead and at least a dozen more wounded.

A coalition led by Saudi Arabia which includes five members of the Gulf Cooperation Council, with the single exception of Oman, began a campaign of airstrikes on Houthi-controlled targets in Yemen on Thursday in what the Saudis call 'Operation Decisive Storm,' and to which the US, UK and France have given their public backing.
