The Armed Forces of the Philippines and the country's police arrested six militants, including one of the key figures of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) organization, during a joint operation in the south of the country on Sunday night, local news website GMA said Monday.

BALI (Sputnik) – The former BIFF vice-chairman, Mohamad Ali Tambak, is suspected of taking part in the killing of 44 servicemen of the Philippine Special Action Force carried out on January 25.

The arrested were heading toward the sea port in the southern Philippine city of General Santos carrying three grenades and two short firearms, according to GMA.

Tambak is expected to reveal information on Abdul Basit Usman, a suspected bomb-maker charged with multiple murder and allegedly linked with al-Qaeda.

Earlier in the month, clashes in the country's south claimed lives of at least two government soldiers and 23 BIFF militants.

The BIFF, fighting for the Islamization of the mostly Christian Philippines, became an independent group in 2008.
