Georgian elite troops will replace US Army division in the international peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan, according to the Georgian Defense Ministry.

TBILISI (Sputnik) – Georgian soldiers were deployed to Afghanistan Thursday to replace a US army division in the international peacekeeping mission Resolute Support, the Georgian Defense Ministry said.

'The main objective of the Georgian military is to provide security to the headquarters of the Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan's capital Kabul. The elite troops by rotation will replace a US Army division. The official mission handover ceremony will take place later in the headquarters of the Resolute Support mission,' the press release said.

Georgia's 31st Light Infantry Battalion of the Third Infantry Brigade was sent to Afghanistan under decree by the Georgian Parliament December 26, 2014. The military will serve in Afghanistan for six months.
