US Secretary of State Kerry said the strategy promoted US' values in a world confronted with the reality of threats across the globe, adding that "it's a vision of an America that energizes and galvanizes alliances and partnerships and puts our credibility and our capacity on the line to get things done."
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – The new US National Security Strategy is ambitious and achievable, and will promote US values around the world, US Secretary of State John Kerry said in a statement on Friday.
'It's a pragmatic, clear-eyed assessment of both the challenges we face and the full arsenal of our power to confront them through moral, diplomatic, economic, development, and military tools," Kerry said. "It's ambitious and achievable."
Kerry also said the strategy promoted America's values in a world confronted with the reality of threats across the globe, adding that "it's a vision of an America that energizes and galvanizes alliances and partnerships and puts our credibility and our capacity on the line to get things done."
Kerry added the new strategy reflected the need for America's leadership on key issues ranging from weapons' proliferation to violent extremism and global climate change. He said the United States was leading and would continue to lead to address such issues.
The new strategy stated Washington could use military force, unilaterally if necessary, when US citizens were threatened and the security of US allies was in danger.
The strategy also stressed that the United States would continue to impose considerable costs on Russia by using sanctions and other means.
The previous 2010 National Security Strategy was issued in 2010 and advocated building more effective partnerships with Russia, as well as India and China, in nuclear non-proliferation and in combating climate change, among other priorities.
