Authorities in the Central African Republic (CAR) say a key militia leader accused of killing hundreds of minority Muslims back in December 2013 has been arrested.

On Sunday, CAR prosecutors said peacekeepers with the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) detained Rodrigue Nagibona, aka General Andjilo, in the country's northwestern town of Bouca.

"General Andjilo is wanted for multiple crimes, including killings, rebellion, illegal possession of weapons of war, criminal association, rape and pillage," Bangui's general prosecutor, Maurice Dibert-Dollet, said.

The militia leader was detained after an exchange of fire between UN forces and his militiamen. He had reportedly been on the run for months.

The CAR descended into chaos in December 2013, when Christian militia groups launched coordinated attacks against the Seleka group, which had toppled the government in March 2013.

Despite the presence of thousands of UN and French forces in the CAR, the conflict, which has killed thousands and displaced about a million people, has not been resolved.

Rights groups have on a few occasions reported that Muslims in the war-torn country "are being butchered" at the hands of Christian militias.
