At least two soldiers have been shot dead by unknown gunmen in a raid on an army base in the West African nation of Ivory Coast, a local member of parliament says.

The armed men crossed over from neighboring Liberia and mounted the pre-dawn assault in the border town of Grabo on Saturday.

'They attacked the military base. As always, they came from Liberia,' Grabo's parliament representative Yaya Coulibaly said, adding, 'Two [soldiers] were killed, that's confirmed, and possibly one of the attackers as well. But this is only a provisional death toll.'

Ivorian soldiers warded off the attack and launched clean-up operations in the area later in the day, Coulibaly noted.

The attack on Grabo, near the county's western border, was the third fatal raid in the area in less than a year. Ivory Coast's officials have blamed former assaults on the supporters of ex-President Laurent Gbagbo who are based in Liberia.

Gbagbo's refusal to admit defeat in a presidential run-off election in late 2010 led to a civil war between his forces and followers of President-elect Alassane Quattara.

In April 2011, Ouattara's forces backed by French troops stormed Gbagbo's residence and arrested him. Gbagbo is currently awaiting trial at the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity committed in the post-election conflict, in which some 3,000 people died.
