An army commander in southern Yemen has managed to escape unhurt after a bomb attack targeted his car and killed his driver.

The incident occurred on Sunday in the southern city of Aden's Khor Maksar district.

The attack also left two bodyguards wounded.

"General Farej al-Atiqi, commander of the 31st armored battalion, was unhurt when a device that had been hidden in his car exploded," one of Atiqi's bodyguards said.

The bodyguard added that the explosive device was detonated by remote control.

Over the past months, al-Qaeda militants have been actively operating in Yemen's south and southeastern areas. The militants have frequently carried out attacks on Yemen's security forces and have been also locked in deadly battles with the Shia Ansarullah fighters.

Yemen's central government has so far failed to confront the terrorist threat. Ansarullah fighters, however, have intervened and managed to drive al-Qaeda militants out of many areas in the country.
