At least a dozen Taliban militants, including a top commander, have been killed in an operation by Afghan security forces in the country's eastern province of Ghazni.
'A group of Taliban rebels under Mullah Fulad were meeting in a house in Rahimkhil village of Andar district early morning when the units of national army, acting upon intelligence report, raided the house and killed 12 insurgents, including their commander, Mullah Fulad, on the spot,' Afghan army spokesman, Nazifullah Sultani, said on Saturday.
Sultani added that six more militants were wounded during the operation.
There has been no comment from the Taliban so far.
The militant group has been advancing in Ghazni in recent months. The province serves as a key link to the southern and southeastern parts of the war-torn country.
The militants have recently stepped up their attacks against the Afghan troops, foreign forces, and civilians.
The group has vowed to escalate the attacks on Afghan forces and US-led troops, their bases, diplomatic missions and vehicle convoys before the foreign forces exit the country at the end of 2014.
The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Washington's so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity remains across the country despite the presence of thousands of US-led troops.
There are currently more than 41,000 foreign troops in Afghanistan, including some 29,000 US forces.
