WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The Department of the Navy announced Oct. 27 that the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Energy issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the purchase of renewable energy to help power three Department of the Navy (DON) installations in Texas.
Once awarded, the contract will serve Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Naval Air Station Kingsville and Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth with up to 55 megawatts (MW) of renewable electricity from a new off-site generation facility over a period of 10 years.
'The Department of the Navy (DON) continues to make progress toward the secretary of the Navy's one gigawatt goal as demonstrated by this most recent milestone,' said Mr. Robert Griffin, executive director of DON's Renewable Energy Program Office (REPO). 'We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure we meet our renewable energy requirements to safeguard strategic flexibility and continuity of operations.'
'We are proud to support the Department of the Navy's mission to secure renewable energy sources and look forward to the successful completion of the acquisition,' said George Atwood, DLA Energy Deputy Commander.
As a result of this RFP, DLA Energy will contract to purchase power for the Navy from a new renewable energy generation project. The power will be delivered through the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT).
DON's aggressive pursuit to acquire alternative energy sources stems from Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus' directive for the service to produce or procure one gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy by December 2015 in order to bolster energy security and resource availability. DLA Energy's issuance comes on the heels of the recently announced Western Area Power Administration RFP to meet the renewable energy requirements of 14 DON installations in California which, once awarded, will be the largest single purchase of renewable energy by a Department of Defense entity. So far in 2014, DON has up to 255 MW of renewable energy in procurement on top of 110 MW in existing capacity. These recent announcements serve as major milestones towards the successful completion of the one GW goal, with more projects to come.
