Iraqi security sources say dozens of volunteer forces fighting ISIL Takfiri militants have been killed in airstrikes carried out by the US-led coalition in Iraq.

They said on Monday that American fighter jets targeted the positions of volunteer forces on the outskirts of the city of al-Mahmudiyah, south of the capital, Baghdad.

This comes as an Iraqi lawmaker accused the US-led coalition of providing the ISIL militants with arms, and bombing the Iraqi army and volunteer forces instead.

Nawal Jomah said the alliance is capable of eliminating the terrorist group within days given its military and technological power.

She added, however, that the alliance doesn't want to eliminate the ISIL because of its own interests in the region.

The US-led coalition has also conducted several airstrikes on ISIL positions across Iraq, but the air raids have so far failed to dislodge the terrorists.

The Iraqi army, backed by volunteer forces, has been fighting the terrorist group for nearly six months now.

The ISIL militants have seized large swathes of land in Iraq and Syria, terrorizing all communities, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds and Christians, in the areas they are controlling.
