LIMASSOL, Cyprus (NNS) -- The Whidbey Island-class dock landing ship USS Gunston Hall (LSD 44) arrived in Limassol, Cyprus, for a scheduled port visit, Oct. 3.
The port visit continues the U.S. 6th Fleet's efforts to strengthen maritime partnerships in order to enhance regional stability.
'The opportunities to interact with our allies during port visits signify the importance of forward presence,' said Commanding Officer Cmdr. Sean K. Burke. 'We must collectively work together to share information and experiences for regional stability.'
The visit also affords Gunston Hall Sailors the opportunity to experience the culture and sights of the host country, Cyprus.
'Every port visit not only gives the crew much anticipated time for rest and relaxation, but it also provides us with an opportunity to soak in the culture and history of our allies,' said Burke. 'Our Sailors constantly hear the phrase liberty is a mission, because it is true. We have the chance to make an impression on the people of Cyprus and also learn from the long and rich history of the island.'
While in port, the ship's Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Organization planned tours that explore the culture and scenery of Cyprus.
'I always try to experience at least one tour when we pull into port,' said Personnel Specialist 2nd Class Ali Madadi, from Los Angeles. 'We would never have time to see the places off the beaten path, if it weren't for MWR tours.'
U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied, joint, and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.
