FASLANE, United Kingdom (NNS) -- U.S. Navy ships assigned to Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 26, pulled into Faslane, Scotland for a routine port visit Oct. 2, prior to the start of exercise Joint Warrior 14-2.

The port visit will give Sailors the opportunity to meet with the people of Faslane and to experience the history and culture of the United Kingdom.

'We are excited to be here and to have this opportunity,' said Capt. Cary Krause, commander, DESRON 26.

Exercise Joint Warrior is a semi-annual training exercise conducted in the coastal waters of the U.K. The training, led by the U.K., is designed to provide NATO and allied forces a multi-warfare environment to prepare for global operations.

'This environment can only be achieved through the relationships we have with our NATO allies,' said Gunner's Mate 2nd Class Michael Wakefield, stationed aboard USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109). 'During the trans-Atlantic crossing, we conducted extensive training in preparation for the unique learning environment that we will enter during Joint Warrior.'

Joint Warrior is the U.K.'s advanced naval certification course and will last approximately two weeks. The exercise scenarios include small boat attacks, boarding operations, air defense, anti-submarine warfare, and ship maneuverability tasks.

'The training and security cooperation engagements we conduct with our allies and partners during this exercise demonstrate the commitment we share in promoting a peaceful and stable Europe,' said Krause. 'The U.S. and our NATO allies and partners stand together in maintaining a Europe that is safe, secure and prosperous.'

The exercise will include air, sea, and ground assets from Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, the U.K. and U.S. Navy units participating include guided-missile cruiser USS Vicksburg (CG 69); guided-missile destroyer USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109); fleet replenishment oiler USNS Kanawha (TAO 196); Commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing (CPRW) 11; and Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadrons (HSM) 46 and 48.
