Afghan presidential dispute remains unresolved

Afghanistan's political deadlock continues to remain unsettled amid a lingering dispute between the two presidential contenders, Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani, Press TV reports.

After Abdullah contested the poll results of the second round, all eight million votes were recounted.

However, the final announcement of the election result will be made once both candidates agree on how to share powers in a unity government between the two camps.

The real dispute, therefore, is over who should have what.

Ashraf Ghani is the likely winner of the recount and Abdullah will be appointed as chief executive officer. That is what they agreed to when US Secretary of State John Kerry visited Kabul.

However, the powers of the chief executive officer remain uncertain. Abdullah is demanding a 50-50 percent power-sharing deal.

Ashraf Ghani, however, has rejected the demand, noting that such arrangement would be unconstitutional.

Now no one knows how longer the election dispute here will last. It may take any turn at any moment because backdoor discussions continue to get both candidates to an agreement.

But this months-long election deadlock has already rocked the daily lives of local people, increasing food prices and the level of crime and unemployment.

Most businesses are stagnant. The Taliban group is also stepping up its deadly bombings to benefit from the current political vacuum and take over the territory.

What is obvious here is that the presidential election crisis has brought this country on the brink of a huge chaos.
