A group of Nigerian soldiers has refused to fight against the Takfiri Boko Haram terrorist group in the northeastern part of the country, citing the lack of appropriate weaponry, a soldier says.
At least 40 soldiers stationed outside Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, have refused to deploy against the Takfiri militants, an unidentified soldier said.
He went on to say that the soldiers lack the proper type of weapons and ammunition to engage in battle with the terrorist group.
"We have vowed not to move one inch until our superiors provide us with all necessary weapons," the solider said.
Meanwhile, Nigerian Defense Ministry spokesman Gen. Chris Olukolade said the incident was being investigated but he could not confirm reports of a mutiny.
The official confirmed, however, that vehicles used by soldiers were old armored cars that were not up to the job.
The development comes as Chadian troops rescued some 85 Nigerians who had been abducted last week by Takfiri Boko Haram militants in the village of Doron Baga on the shores of Lake Chad.
The notorious Takfiri group Boko Haram has already kidnapped more than 400 people, including hundreds of schoolgirls, in Nigeria as government forces failed to put an end to the abductions.
Boko Haram has also claimed responsibility for a number of deadly gun and bomb attacks in various parts of Nigeria since 2009. It has repeatedly targeted civilians, killing more than 2,000 people since January.
