More Palestinians have been killed across the besieged Gaza Strip as Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu orders more air attacks on the coastal enclave.

The Israeli military sources earlier said it halted its air strikes for some six hours.

Israeli warplanes resumed air raids on Gaza after an Egyptian-proposed ceasefire failed to halt the ongoing aggression.

Latest reports say Israeli warplanes have dropped bombs on several residential areas and targeted civilian sites across the impoverished territory.

Witnesses and residents say plumes of heavy smoke could be seen rising over the coastal strip.

Since last Tuesday, Israeli warplanes have struck more than 1300 targets across Gaza, which is home to around 1.8 million Palestinians.

Meanwhile, Israeli troops and tanks remain amassed on Gaza border in preparation for a possible ground assault.

Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has warned that it is prepared to hit back at Israeli forces should the Tel Aviv regime launch a full-scale ground attack against Gaza.

Medical sources say the number of fatalities has already exceeded the death toll from the 2012 conflict.

According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, the death toll from eight days of Israeli airstrikes has mounted to 195. A further 1400 Gazans have also been injured in the ongoing assaults.

According to the United Nations, 80 percent of the casualties have been civilians.

People have held a funeral in Gaza for five Palestinians who have been killed in Israeli attacks overnight on the coastal enclave. The participants in the funeral condemned the US support for Israel.
